The Power of Love

Willow believes in crystal healing, cosmic ordering and the significance of chance encounters. She believes there’s a spiritual explanation for everything. Except she struggles to find a reason why she can turn herself into mist and create a wave of energy which can slam a would-be mugger into a wall. Or why the love of her life left her for a mysterious woman in sunglasses, who then disappeared without trace.

A chance encounter with Firebolt, leader of the Freedom League superhero team, in a Glastonbury coffee shop, does turn out to be significant. He offers her a new start and the chance to use her powers for good.

Servant is a Christian who has joined the Freedom League in order to use his teleporting power to serve God. He and Willow clash from the start, yet they are drawn inexorably to one another.

When Willow leaves the team abruptly for reasons unknown, Servant knows he must put her out of his mind and find a nice Christian girl to settle down with. He is about to propose to devout and straight-laced Ruth, when Willow returns and turns his entire world upside down.

First Page

He didn’t know what made him walk into the tent that day. Looking back, he had a pretty good idea, but at the time, he didn’t have a clue what made him stop, look at the big top, watch the stream of people going in, and decide to follow them.

Had he thought it was a circus? Some kind of music gig? A way to pass the time; while away an hour or two? He’d never have guessed how much it would change his life. At the point when he’d chosen to go and see what it was all about, he hadn’t even known his life needed changing. He was 25, single, working as a labourer. A fairly humdrum life, but there hadn’t seemed to be anything actually wrong with it. He didn’t have a girlfriend, but he wasn’t especially bothered about that. He could get one if he wanted – he was tall with curly chestnut brown hair and a straight nose. Working on the building site had given him a body office workers would pay a fortune in gym memberships to achieve.

  1. When choosing a partner, how important do you think it is that they should be on the same page in terms of their spiritual paths? Can true love really overcome the kind of differences Servant and Willow have in their spiritual beliefs?
  2. Both Servant and Willow believe there is a spiritual element to the origins of their powers, while Brain Cell rejects that possibility entirely, and others had never really thought about it. While superpowers may not exist in the real world, talents do. Where do you think they come from?

  5. If she hadn’t, what do you think would have happened with Servant and Ruth? Would their marriage have been a success?
  6. The truth behind Cloud isn’t revealed until the end of the book. Before her identity was revealed, what did you make of that story? Merely a means to ensure Willow was single when she joined the Freedom League? A throwaway incident which didn’t seem to go anywhere? Or something more?
  7. Painted Man is portrayed as quite wise and perceptive when it comes to relationships, yet his own marriage appears to have ended in disaster. How do you think he has changed since then? Do you think there is any chance of a reconciliation with his family?
  8. What do you think the future holds for Servant, Willow and Sky?
